Cephalexin Uses

The drug works by impeding the bacterial cells from forming cell walls, thus allowing lysis to take place.

Cephalexin uses include, but are not limited to the treatment of such illnesses as: pyelonephritis (kidney infections); infections of the ear, nose and throat; nose, windpipe and lung infections; genital and urinary tract infections; skin or wound infections; soft tissue infections; bone and joint infections.

Here are some of the uses of cephalexin in adults: bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis, cystitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, acne, osteomyelitis, prostatitis, peritonitis. In pediatric patients, the most frequent cephalexin uses include: otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, skin or soft tissue infection, bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis (as an alternative in penicillin-allergic patients).

As for cephalexin uses in veterinary practice, it is used in both dogs and cats to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, wounds and bones, as well as pneumonia and bladder infections. Cephalexin is similar to the veterinary medication cefadroxil, and veterinary practicians often alternate the use of the two drugs. Cephalexin has not shown results against infections induced by parasites (intestinal worms), mites, viruses or fungi.

Cephalexin should not be used in the following conditions: adverse reactions or hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the preparation; porphyriasis (inherited blood disease); mental problems (consult your doctor); nursing.

Cephalexin use in pregnancy: the drug has been categorized by the FDA as category B, so it may be used while you are pregnant after a consultation with a doctor.

Your medical advisor may have recommended cephalexin for conditions other than the ones listed above. Do not give this medication to other patients, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use cephalexin if their medical advisor has not prescribed it.
