Keflex Side Effects
Gastrointestinal side effects of Keflex
Unsettled stomach and sickness have been rarely mentioned. The most widespread Keflex side effect has been diarrhea. It was seldom severe enough to demand interruption of therapy. Side effects of Keflex such as dyspepsia, gastritis, and abdominal pain have also been reported. As in the case of some penicillins and some other cephalosporins, passing hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice have been reported rarely.
Keflex side effects such as these usually ceased after treatment was stopped. For a number of the side effects of Keflex mentioned above, complementary therapy may be needed. Anaphylaxis has also been reported.
Other Keflex side effects have included genital and anal itching, genital moniliasis, vaginitis and vaginal discharge, vertigo, tiredness, headache, anxiety, bewilderment, self-delusion, arthralgia, joint inflammation, and joint disorder. Reversible kidney inflammation has been reported rarely. Eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and slight elevations in AST and ALT have been noted.
In addition to the Keflex side effects listed above, the following allergic responses and altered laboratory tests have been reported for cephalosporin class antibiotics:
A few cephalosporins have been implicated in causing seizures, particularly in patients with renal impairment when the dosage was not reduced. If seizures associated with drug therapy should appear, the use of Keflex should be stopped. Anticonvulsant therapy can be given if clinically indicated.
Patients have been reported to have had severe Keflex side effects (including anaphylaxis) to both drugs.
Any patient who has demonstrated some form of allergic reaction, particularly to drugs, should receive antibiotics with caution. No exception should be made with regard to Keflex.

Cephalexin use in pregnancy: the drug has been categorized by the FDA as category B, so it may be used while you are pregnant after a consultation with a doctor.
